GENERAL INFORMATION

What is Against the Tide?

Against the Tide is an annual family-friendly fundraising event to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. It was started by Maria Vetrano and Helen Privett in honor of Maria's mother, Camille. The event consists of several different activities - a one-mile swim, a two-mile kayak and/or a three-mile recreational walk. Participants can choose to participate in any one, two or all three events!

who can participate in Against the Tide?

Against the Tide brings together participants of all ages and abilities to fight breast cancer. MBCC requires that every participant commit to raising the $150 fundraising minimum prior to the event. Many of our participants raise much greater amounts in donations from family, friends, neighbors & colleagues. click here to see fundraising tips.

what are team requirements?

MBCC is particularly pleased when friends, families, and individuals join together, individuals who often participate to honor a special person, and register as a team. Teams are an exciting way to involve many individuals in one common purpose. The camaraderie also makes fundraising, training and focusing on a goal so much easier and more fun! MBCC encourages you to form a team and also be eligible for a special gift. Team requirements are:

1. Two or more people. Team members do not have to compete in the same event(s). Choice of swim, kayak or walk is decided upon by each individual.

2. Each member of a team MUST sign up individually with the team name entered in the appropriate place on the registration form.

3.    Each REGISTERED team member signing up commits to raising the $150 minimum contribution. If donations raised by the team are pooled together, the total team fundraising must be at least $150 times the number of team members.

Is there an age limit for participating in against the tide?

No, MBCC encourages families to participate. We require all family members to sign up regardless of age. We are especially touched by the efforts of the young to this event. Although many of our young participants enjoy their own fundraising, we realize that some children do not. For participants under the age of 18, MBCC allows them to be included under a parent or guardian's minimum contribution of $150. All participants under the age of 18 are required to provide a parent or guardian's signature in order to participate and must swim, walk or kayak along with a parent or guardian.

Is Against the Tide a race?

All three events are meant to be fun and exciting - the kayak course and the walking course are both meant for non-competitive kayakers and walkers to enjoy sporting with friends and family while raising money for breast cancer research.

We hold two separate swims to accommodate all of our swimmers. You can sign up for either our casual Fitness/Recreational swim or our more challenging Competitive swim. Swimmers participating in the competitive swim must be able to swim a 30-minute mile and have open-water experience. The competitive swim is a timed event, with Certificates of Recognition awarded to the first place male and female swimmers.

The recreational walk is on nature trails in the parks. They are easy trails that are nearby the event site. The kayak course is set up on the lake and is a 2 mile loop that accommodates beginner to expert kayakers. Those participating in any or all events should be in acceptable physical condition for those events.

Where and When is it?

Against the Tide takes place in two locations: Hopkinton State Park on Saturday, June 21st, 2008, and Nickerson State Park on Cape Cod on Saturday, August 16th, 2008. Registration opens at 7:30a.m. for check-in and submitting your pledges. Events take place throughout the morning, click here for events schedule and descriptions. Complimentary breakfast and Award Ceremonies begin at 11:00 and the entire event is generally over by 12:00 noon.

What if I'm not an athlete?

We have combined several kinds of events so that the most athletic to the very beginner can participate! However, if you would like to participate without entering one of the events, we have several ways for you to do that. You can adopt one of our walkers, swimmers or kayakers and collect pledges on their behalf. Or, you can encourage a participant in their challenge and help them raise money and reach their fundraising goal. Or, you can organize a team of swimmers, walkers and/or kayakers to participate. Then on the day of the event, come join the fun. As a cheerleader or a volunteer your contribution is both welcome and appreciated.

What's my first step?

Your first step is to sign up. It is a good idea to sign up ahead of time so that we can be prepared with food and prizes for everyone who is part of the event. Next, ask your friends, family and co-workers to pledge you--and don't forget to pledge yourself. We have made this easy for you with Personal Pledge Pages - a way to set up your own event page on our site to support you in getting pledges and sharing with friends and family about the event. Then on the day of the event, bring your pledge sheet, the money you've collected and your good spirits to Against the Tide! Click here to set up your own Personal Pledge Page!

We also welcome and encourage you to to send your money in early - this saves you time on the day of the event as well as qualifies you to be eligible for a special gift. Click here to check out this special gift! Send in your pledges, payable to MBCC, to the MBCC Office at 1419 Hancock Street, Suite 202, Quincy, MA 02169, with a copy of your pledge sheet. Please be sure to include your name/team name with your pledges to ensure proper credit to you. Also, remember to check if your employer matches your pledges!

Who is eligible to receive the special event day thank-you gifts?

Anyone who contributes $150 gets an event t-shirt. Individuals who raise over $500 and $1,000 receive goodies such as MBCC beach chairs, lunchbags and sweatshirts. Team members must individually contribute $150 or more to receive the special event day thank-you gifts.
