Follow the Money
An Alliance for Accountability
in Breast Cancer
In 2001, MBCC joined efforts with other breast cancer and women's
health organizations across the country to create a new coalition
called Follow the Money: An Alliance for Accountability in Breast
Cancer.
We applaud organizations that are committed to raising money to
fight the epidemic of breast cancer, and we know that every dollar
raised is critical. The dedication and commitment that participants
in fundraising walks, runs, swims, bikes and every other mode of
fundraising events show is inspiring. We are concerned with what
happens to the money that these walkers, runners, swimmers and bikers
have raised and want to ensure that it is ultimately directed to
fighting the breast cancer epidemic.
We believe that participants in fundraising events should feel confident
to ask the following questions:
- What percentage of the events proceeds will be designated
for research?
- What kind of research will be funded?
- Will there be funding for research into environmental links
to breast cancer?
- Will there be local breast cancer advocates involved in the
research selection and funding decision process?
We need
- Funding focused on finding the causes of breast cancer - and
to develop true prevention.
- Research focused on the probable environmental links to breast
cancer.
- Breast cancer activists to be included at all levels of the
research process, including helping to design research proposals,
helping to select future projects to be funded, and participating
in the review of how the funds are being utilized in the research
process.
Its your money. Make sure its used to further your goals
in fighting breast cancer!
Follow the Money continues to monitor Avon, and is working to ensure
that the Avon 2-Day Walks meet the demands we set for the previous
walks:
- underwrite the costs of the walks
- establish Community Advisory Boards in areas where walks are
held
- grant funding to cutting-edge research into the causes and prevention
of breast cancer
